Ms. Schmitt's third grade class participated in a "Mystery Skype" today with an elementary class in Polson, Montana. In a mystery Skype the teachers arrange a Skype session but don't tell the students where the other school is from. The students from each school take turns asking yes or no geography questions until they figure out the other school's state. For example, we asked: Does your state touch an ocean? they asked: Does your state touch another country? etc.
After the states are discovered, each school takes a moment to teach the other school about their own state. We learned that Montana is one of the Rocky Mountain states and that Montana's natural resources include oil, copper and gold. We taught them about our plains and forested areas as well as the fact that President Harry S. Truman is from Missouri. We hope to Mystery Skype with more schools from other parts of the United States sometime this year!
