Willard East students and staff are putting our green screen room to good use this year. Student book presentations, Genius Hour reports, and our own Tiger News Network keep this room busy! Just in case you've missed our TNN productions, here are a few to show you what it's all about.
January brings many new things to an elementary school. You can usually find new students, new units of study and in the library, new books. January also brings the annual library BOE report. Our Willard East Board of Education wants to know what has been happening in our district libraries so the district librarians put together a fun and informational report to share. Here is our Willard East edition. Enjoy!

Holidays in an elementary school are great, but Christmas in an elementary library are extra special. Of all the book genres we have, the Christmas book genre is the largest and most loved. We have 3 1/2 weeks to read as many of these wonderful books as possible. We started today with The Animals' Santa by Jan Brett. I was fortunate enough to get to meet author/illustrator, Jan Brett in 2014. She spoke to a large group of people at the Springfield Greene County Library. She demonstrated how to draw a few of her beloved characters and stayed for a book signing. Our Willard East copy of The Animals' Santa has been autographed by Jan Brett! After hearing the book this week, students have had the opportunity to try their own hand at drawing a Jan Brett woodland character. Today we watched Jan as she modeled drawing the Little Snowshoe. You can watch it also at the link below. Or log onto Jan Brett's website to experience MANY more videos and activities. http://www.janbrett.com/index.html Mogie, The Heart of the House by Kathi AppeltThe Ronald McDonald House of Houston has a wonderful furry friend to greet the children who temporarily call this house their home. Mogie, The Heart of the House is a book about this furry friend and his interactions with two young people as they stay in this home away from home. After reading the book, the students learned about our own Ronald McDonald Houses in Springfield. Students had the option to draw pictures and write letters for the children who stay there. Digital citizenship doesn't end in the classroom. Home environments also shape kids' relationships with technology. While we promote technology use for learning, fun, and bringing people together, it's also important to balance media and tech use with undistracted face-to-face time. Share our #DeviceFreeDinner challenge with your families to drive home the message of balance with device use. Copy and paste the following URL into your class website, newsletter, parent email, and/or social media posts to get your families to take the challenge:https://www.commonsensemedia.org/device-free-dinner Elizabeth, Queen of the Seas by Lynne CoxStudents enjoyed this true story about an elephant seal from Christchurch, New Zealand.
